Connecting people with nature
Inspiring wilder communities
The importance of Inspiring people and communities to learn about, value and act for wildlife and Dorset’s wild places is twofold. Firstly, we need more people to care about nature and to understand how nature-based solutions can help tackle some of the biggest threats such as climate change and the massive decline in species and habitats across the UK. Secondly, research has shown that spending time in nature reduces stress, enhances creativity, boosts mental clarity and improves overall physical health.
Evidence shows us that if 25% of the population – 1 in 4 people – visibly take action, we create a social ‘tipping point’, which can change the behaviour of the majority and bring about change. That is why our projects focus on empowering communities to come together to improve their green spaces as well as reaching people who feel disconnected with nature. There are already so many examples of communities across Dorset, such as Gillingham Town Meadow and Tolpuddle Orchard Meadow where local people have really made a difference and connected to the nature around them.
