Wild About Chesil is the biggest event of the year for the Fine Foundation Chesil Beach Centre, showcasing the wonderful wildlife, rich history and fascinating geology of Chesil Beach. It attracts hundreds of visitors from the local area and further afield. There will be live entertainment and an action-packed programme of wildlife activities for the whole family.
Exhibitors attending include: Wessex Water, Jurassic Coast Trust, Portland Museum, RSPB Little Tern project, Butterfly Conservation, Dorset Mammal Group, and the Dorset Wildlife Trust’s Kingcombe Centre. Entertainment on the day will be provided by Wessex FM, Island Voice Choir, Dorset Wrecks sea shanties and the folk duo, Amy Hopwood. There will also be a display about Dorset’s Marine Giants, the marine education trailer, and the Get Dorset Buzzing roadshow.
Dorset Wildlife Trust’s Marine Centre Assistant, Sarah Hodgson said, “We’re very excited to welcome lots of interesting exhibitors to The Chesil Centre for this free event, so visitors can get a feel for how important the natural environment and wildlife is to the area. It’s a celebration of the special wildlife that exists in this unique place. There will be activities and events for all the family to take part in to learn about wildlife, and we guarantee a great day out for everyone!”
We’re delighted to welcome Wessex Water as our sponsors for this event, for the second year.
Kirsty Scarlett, Wessex Water’s Head of Community Engagement, said: “We’re proud to be supporting Wild About Chesil, which showcases one of the most beautiful corners of our region and everything it has to offer. It should be a fantastic day.”
Activities on the day include an eggcase hunt, seashore scavengers trail, 2-minute beach clean, butterfly transect, chalk pavement art and lots of wildlife-themed crafts for children (and adults!). Plus, there are refreshments in the Taste Café, gifts and keepsakes in the shop and an exhibition area in the centre. The Fleet Explorer boat will also be sailing throughout the day, (£8 Adults; £6 children)), giving visitors a chance to explore the wildlife of the Fleet Lagoon and surrounding areas.
