Major Gifts to the Nature Reserves Fund

Nature is at a crisis point nationally – and globally. And here in Dorset we’re not immune. But we’ve got a plan – and it’s right here on your doorstep. By enhancing and expanding our nature reserves, we can turn the tide on nature’s decline. Every one of Dorset Wildlife Trust’s 42 nature reserves is a stronghold for rare and threatened species. For some, nature reserves are the last defence against habitat loss, vital for preserving biodiversity and protecting ecosystems.

Managing these nature reserves costs £2,277 each day – a huge sum, but perhaps not so considering the hard work and equipment needed to keep 1,950 hectares of vital habitats in top condition. Fencing and walkways all need maintenance and sometimes replacement. Surveying and monitoring must be carried out regularly. Creating just 2km of hedgerow, an important habitat for many nesting birds and hazel dormice, costs £5,000. It’s not always glamorous work, but it’s crucial for our wildlife’s future.

Now, more than ever, we need committed supporters to help us deliver our ambitious goals. Major donations of £5,000 or more are critical to achieving the goal of restoring 30% of land and sea for nature by 2030. If you’re able to make a significant gift, you will be part of an ambitious plan to protect Dorset’s wildlife.

The Nature Reserves Fund will benefit nature reserves across Dorset, from our newly acquired site at Lyscombe, to the more established sites like Upton Heath and Powerstock Common. Alternatively, if you have a favourite site you’d like to support specifically, we’d love to have a conversation about how we can facilitate that. Every donation will power more work on more reserves and drive more wildlife recovery in Dorset.
